Jake SpeaksFrom Jake...

"Photography has always been an integral part of my life. As a child, I would sit for hours in our den, perusing back issues of National Geographic, and dreaming of someday visiting the places depicted in these magazines.

The world first opened to me through the medium of climbing at age 12 (1986) when I climbed Mount Rainier. I was immediately hooked - not just on the mountains, but also on the people who inhabit, live, and work in these pristine places. During my three years at Holderness School, I continued climbing and developed my photographic skills. During my senior year, I traveled to Nepal for the first time and became enamored with the people and cultures of the Himalayan region. My sophomore and senior years at The Colorado College brought me back to Nepal for study (School for International Training) and for my thesis (Newar Buddhism in Bhaktapur: Eleventh Century India in Contemporary Nepal) .

Since then, I have traveled the world as a guide (for Rainier Mountaineering, Inc., International Mountain Guides, and Mountain Link) and photographer. My journeys have taken me all over the world: 16 expeditions to the Himalaya (including 5 Everest expeditions and 2 Cho Oyu expeditions), 5 expeditions to Peru, 5 expeditions to the Alps, 2 expeditions to Denali, 86 summits of Mount Rainier via 6 routes, three expeditions to Kilimanjaro, and many other trips and expeditions worldwide. I was a climbing team member and photographer for the 1999 & 2001 Mallory & Irvine Research Expeditions to Everest's Northeast Ridge.  In the spring of 2002, I was hired by Discovery and Ford Motor Company to photograph the 2002 American Women's "No Boundaries" Everest Expedition, and, on May 18, 2002, I reached the 29,035 foot summit of Mount Everest via the Southeast Ridge route. I returned yet again to Everest in the spring of 2003, this time to the Northeast Ridge to photograph Global Extremes Mt. Everest: The 4Runners of Adventure television series for the Outdoor Life Network and Toyota. I reached the summit - shooting still images as well as live video - on May 30, 2003.

Despite my varied travels, my specialty remains the Himalayan regions of Nepal and Tibet. With fluency in Nepalese language and an intimate knowledge of Himalayan people and cultures, I have a unique inroad to these spectacular societies."
